Understanding player types and motivations

Discover why people play squash and how to attract a range of audiences with fun and engaging activities.

Types of squash player

There are around one million people who play squash every year in England. Amongst this one million, there are varying playing frequencies and motivations which can be seen in the market segments below.

When developing your playing opportunities at the club it's important to think about all different player types and their motivations to provide an activity that is right for them. Players can move through these players types in either direction, perhaps starting off playing infrequently as a casual dipper. With the right offer, these players can move to playing a few times a month and become a social regular player. However, not everyone wants to work towards playing more often.

Click on the player types below to find out more:

Committed club player

"Squash is my sport, I enjoy competing in the leagues.'

= Approx 40,000

These players are the mainstay of many clubs, playing a few times a week often taking part in competitions and leagues. Squash is their number one sport and they enjoy the competition and frustration outlet squash gives them. On court, it's all about playing your best, improving and being competitive. Off court, they love the social aspect of the sport. Typically these players are more likely to be male.

Social regulars

"I enjoy the social side of the game, we sometimes get a little competitive, but don't take it too seriously."

= Approx 350,000

These players play at least once a month usually with the same person or people. You may find these players at a squash club, or they may play informally at a leisure centre. They enjoy playing socially to catch up with friends and keep fit. They also enjoy the competitive side of squash but in a friendly way rather than in organised team squash. On court, they like to work hard for fitness and have a good time with friends.

Casual dippers

"I don't play often but when do I know I'm getting a good workout."

= Approx 600,000

These players play least frequently, just a few times a year, and they're most likely to play in a leisure centre. Health and fitness is important to them and they tend to be active people taking part in various other sports and physical activities. They play squash or Squash 57 mainly with one other person and enjoy the social, the fitness and the friendly competition between friends.

There is a higher percentage of women in this group and the casual dipper market can be split into two areas;

  • The more socially-focused casual dipper - tends to play for fun and fitness, doesn't matter about knowing the rules. Skews more towards female players.
  • The competitive-focused casual dipper - tends to enjoy a more competitive experience, plays to beat their opponent but still a social experience on court. Skews more towards male players.

For a club to thrive, it's important to offer an activity that suits these different player types.
