The annual National Schools Championships Finals returned to Manchester this week with 48 school teams vying to have their names etched on the coveted trophies.
Spectators were treated to squash of the highest order at the National Squash Centre as the country’s leading squash schools including former title holders Wycliffe, Millfield and Gosworth went head to head in more than 300 matches across seven courts over three days.
Now in its 45th year, the National Schools Championships provides all schools, whatever their standard, a chance to play competitive squash and comprises of Boys and Girls Under 15 and 19 categories.
Action commenced on Monday with the National Schools Trophy Finals, providing schools and colleges with a second bite at reaching a National Final. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the top eight teams in the country go head-to-head in the main draw finals, following a long season of competitive qualifying rounds.
In the Boys Under 19 main draw, nine-time champions, Wycliffe College were edged out by Ackworth School who won the prestigious title for the first time. Meanwhile, Gosforth Academy clinched the Girls Under 19 title for the first time after downing 2016 winners Wycliffe College.
For the second year running, Ackworth School and Gosforth Academy claimed the main draw Boys Under 15 and Girls Under 15 titles respectively.
