Becoming the Wolf: The Story of Nick Matthew debuts in Manchester

A film charting the success of three-time world squash champion Nick Matthew debuted in Manchester last night.

England Squash, the national governing body held an exclusive screening of its film Becoming the Wolf: The Story of Nick Matthew to a private audience at AJ Bell’s offices in Salford.

Commenting on the film, BBC Five Live’s James Gregg said,

“An inspiring and insightful film illustrating how far one person will go to be the best. Nick’s determination and perseverance to succeed no matter what left me awestruck.”

The film, released ahead of the forthcoming AJ Bell PSA World Championships in December, chronicles Nick Matthew’s journey from grassroots to greatness and the triumphs and challenges along the way.

Keir Worth, England Squash CEO said, “We’re thrilled to bring Nick’s story to life through this short film. Becoming the Wolf is a powerful portrayal of the determination, self-belief and skill needed to become a sporting legend. We hope it will inspire future generations.”

Featuring talking heads, archive footage and vintage photos, Nick reflects on his remarkable twenty-year career and the defining moments that led to him becoming the greatest English squash player of all time.

The 40-minute film, which was made by brand agency Dair, has received praise from across sport. GB Triathlete Harry Wilshire said, “An absolute masterclass on how to become the best in the world at what you do. What fascinated me was the adjustments he made to his game technically and mentally in order to become the world-class athlete he is today.”

Matthew, who will be retiring at the end of the season, will be gunning for his fourth and final world title at the AJ Bell PSA World Championships from 7-18 December in Manchester. Tickets are available to buy at Ticket Master.
