Female coach development programme off to a flying start

More women are on their way to becoming qualified squash coaches following our Women and Girls Level 1 Award in Coaching Squash.

Fully-funded by England Squash and our Foundation, the course, held on 30 July at Edgbaston Priory, trained and upskilled 11 women in delivering squash to women and girls, enabling them to progress through our coaching pathway and develop players from grassroots to elite.

Gayle Pink, Workforce Development Manager at England Squash commented, "The passion and enthusiasm of the group to put their newly developed coaching skills to use and drive female squash participation in their local communities was infectious. The campaign is off to a great start."

Currently, female coaches account for 30% of the coaching workforce across all sports, while the number of qualified female coaches drops to 17% and highly qualified (Level 3 and above) drops to 12%.

More than 50 women will be involved in the Squash Girls Can coach development programme which aims to raise the profile of female coaches and increase the number of qualified female coaches through funded coaching courses and holistic mentoring.

Level 1 Course Tutor, Kirsty McPhee added, “It was a really enjoyable day, all the women and girls were brilliant to work with. It was great to see that these women are as passionate as I am about getting more women involved in coaching and then ultimately playing squash.“

"It was so liberating to know that I wasn't the only one concerned with the lack of female coaches, but also wasn’t the only one willing to do something about it. Lovely and wonderful day.” Dionne Willis, course attendee.

September will see the launch of our Women and Girls Level 2 Award in Coaching Squash, enabling 18 women to progress through our coaching pathway. In addition, we'll be interviewing 10 candidates for our Level 3 qualification.
