National Coach confident England’s women can defend World title

2014 Team England World Champions
National Senior Coach David Campion believes England’s recent winning form will help them ahead of the WSF Women’s World Team Squash Championships in Paris which takes place from 28 November until 3 December.

The squad, who travel to Issy-les-Moulineaux this weekend for the 20th team championship, features World No.2 Laura Massaro, World No.10 Alison Waters, World No.12 Sarah-Jane Perry and World No.17 Victoria Lust.

The quartet are looking to defend the World Team title they won two years ago in Canada.

With Massaro storming to victory in the Net Suite Open on the PSA tour in October, and Waters and Perry recording convincing performances at the Carol Weymuller Open earlier this month, Campion is confident the girls can combine to emulate their recent individual performance for the team event.

“We have selected a team we believe are strong contenders and have every chance of successfully defending our title. Laura and Alison have vast experience in world team events, and both are in excellent form leading into these Championships. Sarah-Jane has recent back-to-back victories against two top 5 players. Meanwhile, Victoria Lust has been causing problems for much higher ranked players, so we are confident that she can do a fantastic job when required.” Campion said.

"Our players have come into some great recent form, which no doubt will help their confidence leading into the event.”

“At this moment in time, the girls have the winning habit and in tight matches this can be a deciding factor as there are such fine margins between all the girls on the tour right now.”

The Egyptian team, which features World No.1 Nour El Sherbini and World No.3 Nouran Gohar, will be England’s biggest threat, although France will be determined to reach the final for the first time in 37 years on home soil led by 2016 US Open winner and World No.6 Camille Serme.

But Campion believes such fierce competition will make the tournament all the more unpredictable and exiting.

“The Egyptian team is the strongest we have ever seen right now and go in to the tournament as hot favourites.”

“Malaysia, France and Hong Kong will offer up some tough opposition given their individual players. The team that doesn't have a high seeding but look very capable of causing an upset are the USA. We have them in our group so I’m just hoping that upset isn't us!”
