National Schools Championships Finals

It was a double success for Epsom as they landed the Boys and Girls Key Stage 5 trophies at the National School Championships Finals.

Both titles were taken with resounding victories as the Boys’ final was sealed with a five-match triumph with only two games dropped throughout.

The Epsom boys team dispatched Ackworth in the first round before edging past Millfield in the semi-finals to reach the final where Ronnie Hickling, Wilf Baker, Luke Camfield, Luke McBride and Zach Woolven were successful against their counterparts.

In the Girls’ decider, Epsom, who beat Downe House A and Balcarras on route to the final, also only dropped two games in the decider as Savannah Ingledew, Maja Maziuk, Izzy Hutton and Flo Tanguy chalked up comfortable wins.

Elsewhere, Wycliffe overturned a two-game deficit in the Boys Key Stage 3 final to defeat Winner Group 3-2.

Winner Group, who edged past St Aidan’s and King Edward’s in round one and the semi-finals, respectively, were dominant in the opening two matches, with Shunsaku Karyiazono and Jonty Godfrey winning their match-ups.

However Wycliffe stormed back in the third to halve the deficit, before emphatically levelling the match-up in the fourth with Wycliffe’s Oliver Jewkes winning 11-2 and 11-3.

Wycliffe’s momentum carried through to the final game as Arthur McKay defeated Charlie Wright 11-6 in both games to clinch the title for Wycliffe and cap a tremendous fightback.

There was another thriller in the Boys Key Stage 4 final, as Epsom and King Edward’s went the distance with the latter edging it to take the crown.

Epsom drew first blood as Ronnie Hickling beat Harry Green 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, but King Edward’s nudged ahead in the second match-up when Jared Evans dispatched Wilf Baker in two games.

But Epsom drew level in the third match, as Luke Camfield bounced back from losing the first game against Ojas Mishra to win the second and third games both 11-5.

Zach Woolven of Epsom then reclaimed their advantage with a 2-1 victory over Rohan Sahota, but Aaaryan Singh’s two-game triumph over Luca Nicolosi of Epsom clinched the title for King Edward’s as they came out on top 7-6 overall.

Meanwhile in the Girls Key Stage 4 final, Gosforth Academy produced a great come-through-behind victory to come out on top against Epsom.

Epsom’s Maja Maziuk and Izzy Hutton gave them a four-point lead before Kate Naisbitt of Gosforth Academy won both her games to cut the deficit in half before Katherine Palmer followed that to draw Gosforth Academy level.

Despite Satomi Brocklebank of Epsom nudging them back in front in the final encounter against Gosforth Academy’s Sarah-Jane Mothersole when she claimed the first game, Mothersole won the two remaining games 11-7 and 11-6 to seal the trophy for Gosforth Academy.

In the Girls Key Stage 4 final, Bromley High claimed the crown in dominant fashion as they saw off Epsom.

Bromley High only lost two games across the five match-ups, as Evie Pulford, Jazz Burroughs, Aara Chima and Daisy Kingsland-Moor all won 2-0 against their Epsom counterparts to land the title.
