Selby targeting first PSL winner's medal in Manchester final

Macau Open champion Daryl Selby is determined to add a first PSL winner’s medal to his collection with a victory in the Manchester final next week.

His Leicester side take on Nottingham in a huge night at the National Squash Centre on Tuesday.

World No.12 Selby will go head-to-head with Nick Matthew – one of England’s most decorated players in the history of the professional game – in the headline match on the all-glass court.

Selby, 33, has been looking forward to the event and revealed he had spoken to his England colleague ahead of their big match. He said: “It would be huge for me to win it with Leicester.

“They’re a great club with a really friendly atmosphere, it would be great for them after all of their hard work. Last year, we made it to the semis and this year we’ve taken another step forward.

“Personally, I’ve won quite a few different things but the PSL isn’t one of them, so it would be great to win it.”

Selby’s title haul includes a gold medal with England at the World Team Championships, a bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the 2016 Macau Open. He has spent just one month outside the world top 20 since November 2009.

After spending many seasons playing for St George’s Hill' PSL team in Surrey, Selby made the move to a brand new team at Leicester. He said the first two seasons were a learning curve for the team, with matches routinely clashing with tournaments on the PSA calendar.

“The chairman told me he wanted to win it in the next two years,” he said. “I said I could help him improve the team and we brought in some talented players and it has paid off.”

Tuesday’s team will include England Academy player George Parker, Mark Fuller, Darren Lewis and World No.13 Emily Whitlock. Book your seats now to a blockbuster night jam-packed with exciting squash.
