Squash stalwart steps down

England Squash's Eric Cruttenden is retiring after dedicating a lifetime to squash.

Eric Cruttenden has announced his retirement from England Squash after 26 years. Eric joined the organisation full-time in 1990 following his retirement from a long career in shipping. A former England player, level 3 coach, tournament grade referee, tournament organiser and Team England manager, Eric has devoted a lifetime to the sport.

England Squash CEO, Keir Worth commented, “Eric has made an outstanding contribution to the world of squash and we are indebted to the services he has provided over the last 26 years within the competition and technical services departments.

“He has been instrumental in promoting and organising masters squash at both a national and local level and securing its future in England. He has been an absolute delight to work with and we wish him all the best.”

Eric started playing squash in his 20's and has represented both his county and country at masters championships including the British Masters O75s.

In the 1970's, Eric was at the forefront of starting and organising masters squash at a local and national level including the Home Countries International Championships and Inter County Championships. He also managed and organised the England Masters team from 1985 to 2004.

In 1990, he joined England Squash (formally the SRA) full-time and was instrumental in expanding the British Masters to include many additional age categories.

Commenting on his retirement, Eric said, “I started playing squash in 1945. I've been involved in the sport throughout my life whether as a player, coach, referee, manager or administrator and have loved every minute.

"I’ve had the most wonderful time with the most wonderful people and have made some life-long friends. I’d like to thank the squash community for their companionship and support. I’d also like to thank England Squash for their lovely card and whiskey.”
