England bring home the bronze!

England secured an impressive bronze medal at the 2016 Men’s World Junior Team Championships in Poland.

The Men’s team, consisting of Charlie Lee (Surrey), Kyle Finch (Hampshire), Harry Falconer (Lincolnshire) and Adam Corcoran (Hampshire) fell to the top seeds, Egypt in a close semi-final to finish third overall.

Lee Drew, England Squash National Junior Coach, commented:

“It was a significant result to win the bronze medal at the team event."

"The players performed well and made improvements using feedback from the individuals week during the team week."

"This was highlighted by the team advancing further than the seeding of five which was made after the individual competition. At the start of the week the team would have happily taken 3rd place, but post semi-final match the players were disappointed as they knew they were very close to going even further in the competition.”

Individuals

The team event was preceded by the Men’s and Women’s World Junior Championships, with England taking a young group of players to the event.

The standout performer in the Men’s competition was Tom Walsh who grasped his opportunity with both hands and progressed to the last 16, playing some brilliant, mature and determined squash.

After losing his first match, fifteen year old Nick Wall booked his place in the Plate final with some high quality squash, where he met fellow Englishman Adam Corcoran. Corcoran prevailed in an extremely entertaining and close affair.

In the Women’s event, Amelia Henley progressed through to the quarter-finals and finished a respectable sixth.

There were two other notable performances in the Women’s event from Lucy Turmel and Elise Lazarus, who finished 17th and 19th respectively. They are both likely to be part of a strong women's team next year.

Tania Bailey, England Squash High Performance Coach, added:

“We were treated with some great performances and some disappointment. Overall the week was a positive experience for the juniors as they learned a lot and this will stand them in good stead for future events.”
