England Squash announces updated Transgender Inclusion in Competition Policy

We’ve published an updated Transgender Inclusion in Competition Policy, effective from 31 January 2026. The policy sets out how transgender and nonbinary players can participate in England Squash sanctioned competitions, in line with legal requirements and national sporting guidance.

As the national governing body, we remain committed to a safe, fair and inclusive squash community in which all players, including transgender and nonbinary participants, and women and girls, feel respected, supported and able to take part in our sport. The updated policy aligns with the Equality Act 2010 and the latest UK Sports Councils guidance , enabling clear, evidence based decisions that balance fairness and inclusion.

This policy has been developed through a robust and collaborative process, including consultation with players, clubs, counties and other stakeholders, and the support of our Inclusion Advisory Group. We have also drawn on legal frameworks and national guidance to ensure the policy is fair, proportionate and reflective of the needs and experiences of our community.

What's changing?

The policy sets out how transgender and nonbinary players can take part in England Squash competitions. As squash is recognised as a gender affected sport, we have a responsibility to balance fairness with inclusion. Competitions will fall into two categories:

• Regulated Competitions

Competitions that contribute to rankings, national or regional titles, the England talent pathway, higher-level events or international selection. Fairness is prioritised, and eligibility rules apply.

• Recreational Competitions

Competitions focused on participation, enjoyment and community engagement. These are not linked to rankings or titles and offer more flexible, inclusive formats.

Why this matters?

England Squash believes every player should feel welcome on court. Transgender and non‑binary players are valued members of our community, and this policy provides clarity and consistency while supporting an environment rooted in respect and dignity.

We also recognise the importance of maintaining fair and meaningful competitive opportunities for women and girls, and this policy is designed to support those opportunities alongside our commitment to inclusion.

While the policy offers clear guidance, we acknowledge that this is an evolving area. England Squash will continue to review its practical implementation and welcome community feedback to ensure it remains relevant, balanced and effective.
