Massaro targeting Commonwealth gold

World number four Laura Massaro has outlined her ambition to achieve her first Commonwealth gold medal ahead of the Gold Coast games in April.

The three-time Commonwealth silver medallist was speaking to ITV’s Granada Reports David Chisnall following the announcement that the Lancashire star has been named as the no. 1 seed in the women’s draw.

The 2014 World Champion said a gold medal is all that eludes her in an otherwise hugely successful career. The 34-year-old said:

“A gold is what you are after and what everyone wants to get their hands on.”

“I want to play relaxed and try and play my best – if I can do that then I think I have every chance of coming home with the gold.”

Massaro is set for gold after being named as number one seed in the women’s singles as well as being seeded seventh in the women’s doubles with Sarah-Jane Perry.

The Gold Coast games will be the third Commonwealth games that the four-time British National champion has featured in, but the allure of the competition has still not worn off on Massaro.

“The Commonwealths are huge for us, they are the only multi-sport games we play.”

“We are part of team England which obviously brings the whole different dynamic to it and I think it is the one event that we have that transcends squash.
