Using video analysis to get ahead

In an age of technological innovation and scientific creativity, the use of video and statistical analysis in squash continues to grow inexorably. Indeed, few people in the sport are more familiar with such methods than Gareth Chappell, an expert performance analyst with around seven years of experience working with and alongside elite level athletes.

And with the heat of a sporting moment often leading to players’ judgements and memories of a match becoming ‘clouded’, Gareth believes the employment of video analysis is vital in providing accuracy and objectivity.

In light of that, here are his top five tips in how to get started and become accustomed to analysing your game…

1. Get a fellow player or your coach to film you executing a certain shot or movement that you may be struggling with. It is likely that you will only need to look back at two or three examples to generate talking points. You’ll be amazed by how much you can take from a 10 second clip.
