Top seeds march through to English Junior quarters

England’s young guns began their quest today for national glory at the Dunlop English Junior Championships in Hull with the top seeds sailing through to the next round.

Sussex’s Tom Walsh recorded a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Suffolk’s Cameron Haddow winning 11-2, 11-7, 11-2 to set up a quarter-final clash against Essex’s Aaron Allpress. The British National Boys Under 19 champion said: “I had a really good start, leading 7-0 in the first before he climbed back. I was moving really nicely. It feels great to reach the quarters again.”

Elsewhere in the Boys Under 19s, two-time British National champion Nick Wall (Yorks) and England number one Jamie Wyatt (Surrey) progressed through but Sussex's Curtis Malik was forced to retire due to injury.

Meanwhile, Girls Under 19 top seed Elise Lazarus (Essex), a four-time EJC champion was afforded a bye in round one and meets Yorkshire’s Aisha Forster in the quarters.

Boys Under 17 top seed Lewis Anderson (Warks) booked a place in the last eight following 3-0 wins over Matthew Thompson (Northumb) and Noah Meredith (Sussex). Meeting the British National Under 17 champion is EJC Boys Under 13 champion Adam Goad (Cumbria).

In the Girls Under 17 category, two-time EJC champion Alice Green (Essex) dispatched Megan Evans (Northumb) 11-3, 11-7, 11-8 to set up a last eight date with 2017 EJC runner-up Maia Pannell (Hants).

Joining Green in the quarters is 14-year-old Katie Malliff who beat Ellis Mills (Cambs) 11-3, 11-5, 11-4. Malliff, a British Junior Open 2018 semi-finalist will face Lydia Robinson (Yorks).

Meanwhile, Green’s younger brother, Oliver, justified his top seeding in the Boys Under 15s after overcoming Essex’s Stanley Sykes and Thomas Ramsey (Cambs). Green will meet Ben Beachill (Yorks), the son of Lee Beachill, the former world no.1.

Top seed Torrie Malik (Sussex) marched into the last eight after overcoming Lancashire’s Kara Lawrenson 11-2, 11-5, 11-7 and goes on to meet Olivia Phillips (Bucks). Joining Malik in the quarters is British National 2017 junior champion Asia Harris (Yorks) who, despite a slow start, dispatched Erin Tamlison 11-9, 11-3, 11-0.

EJC champion Amelie Haworth (Hants) breezed through to the last eight of the Girls Under 13s after a convincing win over April Parry (Worc) 11-1, 11-4, 11-1 and will face Jessica Weatherspoon (Durh) in the quarters.

British Junior Open 2018 champion Jonah Bryant (Sussex) sailed through to the Boys Under 13 quarters following two straight game victories to set up a clash with Thomas Greengrass (Sussex).

The Boys Under 11s went to seed with top seeds Dylan Roberts (Kent) and Jude Gibbins (Kent) progressing through.

The Girls Under 11 saw top seeds Charlie McCrone (Lancs) and Mariam Eissa seal quarter-finals berths. Meeting Eissa (Warks) in the quarters is Annabell Hill (Surrey) who produced a minor upset to knock out Emma Logan (Suff) following a topsy turvy five-game thriller: 11-3, 11-8, 2-11, 12-14, 12-10.
